The Joy of Quitting: Brought to you by FU Money

We quit our jobs.

We’re not pulling the plug on working or perusing early retirement even earlier (yet). We each decided it was a time for a change and to find jobs that would be more fun and fit into our lives better.

This was one of those times that having FU money pays off well before being financially independent. It would be easy to find reasons why leaving well paying, secure, “prestigious”, etc etc. jobs isn’t a good idea. Life is too short to worry about stuff like that, and we’re working on perfecting the subtle art of not giving a fuck.

So onwards and upwards to better things. If it turns out we made the wrong decision, well hey, we have FU money and can always quit again and not lose any sleep over it.

  1. Sometimes I would love to just quit my job and do something like this If I was single, it would be even more tempting. But I figure I can stick it out for another 6-7 years (hopefully less) and then retire and do whatever I want for the rest of my life.

Good luck to the both of you in your new adventures!

Btw, I love this comment and may have to use it sometime! “FU Money: bringing you new adventures without giving a fuck.”

  3. WHOA. Huge congrats, you guys! We’re super impressed and inspired. Given the limited job options in our area, we don’t feel like we can muster the cajones to follow suit, but you’re definitely our heroes. Wohoo!!

  4. Well congratulations! And more power to you for truly not giving a fuck, because in the grand scheme of things, our jobs just don’t matter all that much. Our happiness does. I respect your move and know that you’ll be better off for it.

    Well done!

Congrats! That has to be an awesome feeling getting to choose what job to have next just because you can. Excellent!

  6. Congrats! Can’t wait to learn about your new endeavors.

  7. Congratsssss!!! I’m impressed you both are double teaming it with the dual quitting. You’re right, life is too short to worry about leaving high stress jobs. Especially when you can afford it! I’ve also just quit my job so can empathize with how you’re feeling. Congrats again!!

Thanks for the kind words. It’s definitely nice to have options, and we each have something new lined up.

One of the interesting things for me was how willing my manager was to bend over backwards to try and keep me once I gave her the news: she offered more flexibility, better pay, and reporting to someone else if I wanted. All things that might have made me stick around if they offered it earlier.

It’s good to know that you can always change your work environment for the better simply by being willing to walk away. That knowledge could come in handy in the future.
